Depression Treatment
Ketamine for Depression Treatment in Scottsdale, AZ
Today most depression is treated with oral antidepressants known as SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor). Common drugs include Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, and Celexa. Or SNRI (Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor). This includes Pristiq, Cymbalta, Fetzima, and Effexor.
Statistically, these treatments are only effective in 47% of patients and have challenging side effects. We are now using ketamine to successfully treat patients with SSRI and SNRI resistant depression. When ketamine is used in the proper set and setting and combined with integration and intent, we are able to help over 90% of our patients who have failed traditional therapies.

How Does Ketamine Help with Depression? (The Science)
Traditionally, research focused on serotonin– as the chemical solely responsible for mood. Hence, SSRI and SNRI were developed to treat depressive conditions/symptoms. However, there is a second pathway at the NMDA receptor that plays an equal or possibly a more important role in depression.
At lower doses, ketamine is able to act at this receptor and increase glutamate (the most abundant excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain), and cause a cascade of events that result in neuroplasticity (new nerve connections) and the reversal of the negative effects of chronic stress and depression in the brain (Prefrontal cortex). Chronic depression has been shown to do the exact opposite of ketamine, and deteriorate these important neural connections. Ketamine has even been shown to be effective in alleviating suicidal ideation.
What Does This Mean For Me? (Bottom Line)
When infused at a low dose into the bloodstream, IV ketamine treatments can bring rapid relief in over 90% of patients who failed traditional antidepressants. Traditional antidepressants can take anywhere from weeks to months to fully feel the effects, but ketamine works much faster. Patients often feel improvement after a single treatment. However, an initial series of treatments over two weeks will allow lasting results for several weeks to several months. When combined with integration coaching, lifelong changes can occur.
